A Controversial Issue on Interest of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN): A Case Study

Muhammad Ridhwan Ab. Aziz

Journal of Social Economics, 2014, vol. 1, issue 4, 187-192

Abstract: Education is very important for the development of humankind and economic progress. Nevertheless, not everyone has the opportunity and access to the proper education system. Interest is something that is known to anyone living in a capitalist country. It has become so completely institutionalized and accepted in modern economies that it is almost impossible to conceive that there are some who completely oppose it and refuse any transactions that involve interest. But there are devout Muslims who refuse to deal in interest. This case study tries to explore the controversial issue relating to the loan offered by the PTPTN either it is considered as riba or otherwise. The purpose of this case study is not to show any weaknesses of the named person, but just to provide a basis for discussion.
