Gender Equality and Human Development in Nigeria: An Appraisal of the Impact of Goal 3 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Akwa Ibom State

Abstract: This study examined the contributions and challenges of Goal 3 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on gender equality and human development in Akwa Ibom State. The focus was on how education and employment could be used as instruments to reduce the gender gap and improve the social worth of women in the area. The study relied strongly on the field-based data information from the state’s Ministry of Economic Development, Uyo, Questionnaire as well as Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). A population of 24,553 people, comprising 12,961 Males and 11,592 Female were used for analyses. Findings show that, there has been a significant improvement in the number of women who are now in schools, employment, and in political office in spite of its numerous challenges. The study recommended that, to step up the tempo of human development in the area. Many more women should be made to be aware of the activities of the MDG 3 in the area through broad enlightenment/sensitization programmes.
