Perceptions of Student Representatives with Respect to University Leadership: The Cases of Portugal (I.S.C.E. and Portalegre) and the United Kingdom (Sheffield University)

Abstract: This paper studies the perceptions of university student representatives in different geographical contexts: Portugal and the United Kingdom. It examines students’ views regarding the extent of their participation in the management of their university, as well as their level of satisfaction with their degree of participation. The students perceived their involvement as being limited, and this resulted in feelings of frustration and dissatisfaction. In Portugal, most respondents demanded a higher level of participation, in addition to specific training on becoming an efficient leader. Specifically, this paper proposes recommendations for future work, which are based on the most significant findings of this study.
