Abstract: [This is the first of a series of articles on Chinese economic development. The first two articles will describe in outline the major economic changes during ihe first decade and half of the communist regime. In the articles that will follow an attempt will be made to analyse some of the crucial problems arising out of the application of the totalitarian approach to the transformation of an under-developed, agrarian economy- -Ed.]
