Recent trends in regional and local demographic and economic inequality in New Zealand and associated regional development implications

Etienne Nel

Local Economy, 2015, vol. 30, issue 1, 12-20

Abstract: Regional and local demographic and economic inequality appears to be increasing in New Zealand. Drawing on recently released statistical data, this paper reflects on and considers the implications of growing differences. The dominance of the cities and selected regions contrasts with demographic decline and relative contraction of the economic share of the less advantaged regions. New Zealand's government is currently formulating a new approach to regional development which should focus not just on comparative advantage but also on addressing equity concerns.
