Appraisal: Training

N/a

National Institute Economic Review, 1991, vol. 136, issue 1, 7-9

Abstract: In this number of the Review we include three papers concerned with vocational training. The article by Hilary Steedman, Geoff Mason and Karin Wagner on page 60 compares the use made in Britain, France and Germany of technicians and supervisory staff; the article by Peter Hart and Alan Shipman on page 77 considers policy options for increasing the numbers of skilled workers in this country; the note by Sig Prais on page 86 is concerned with the reliability of skills testing and the approach adopted by the NCVQ. (The article on page 93 by John Ermisch contains information about labour mobility in Europe which is also of relevance in this context.) This appraisal, by the editorial board of the Review, considers some broad issues arising out of the research findings of the Institute and others in recent years.
