Abstract: Travel and accommodation have long gone hand in hand. In the increasingly competitive global economy alliances and liaisons have become an integral part of tourism organization; in addition to integrating the two major sectors of the industry, alliances and liaisons also have the effect of integrating tourism into the wider service economy. This paper discusses the basis on which these unions are formed and their implications for tourism and, in a wider context, development.
