Abstract: This paper summarises the comprehensive approach to tackling the problems of poor neighbourhoods developed by the British government's Social Exclusion Unit (SEU). It analyses neighbourhood decline and why it has occurred, and describes the SEU's National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal, which is focused on improving public services in England, building inclusive partnerships locally that focus on community needs and using new data to target help where it is most needed. It shows how the strategy is based on proven initiatives and underpinned with significant new funding.
