This paper deals with an important but as yet unexplored facet ill the Sociology of lndian diaspora. namely. the interaction between Indian nationals and diasporic Indians. Focusing on the encounters between Trinidad Indians and Indian nationals. it analyses the processes of inter-cultural perception interpretation, evaluation, and response. Set in the theoretical frameworks of sociological phenomenology and symbolic interactionism, it delineates the social construction of the other Indian
