Demographic Transition In Karnataka: A Regional Perspective

Abstract: This paper analyses the demographic trends in the state of Karnataka from a regional and district perspective. It traces the historical patterns of population growth in the state, examines the major contributing factors for population growth. draws attention to the stages of demographic transition and its policy implications. Large variations in the determinants of population growth viz. age at marriage, fertility and mortality levels and contraceptive acceptance have been observed at the regional and district levels. But the widening regional disparities can only he tackled by micro-level programmes and strategies. In short. the achievement of demographic transition in Karnataka. to a great extent. depends on the socio-economic development of its backward districts and regions.
