Abstract:
N.D. Kondrat'ev once claimed that Russian political economy matured to the level of European economics only towards the beginning of the twentieth century. Before that period Russian economic thought was dominated by European (mainly German) traditions. This article will explain why that influence was so significant by focusing on some of its specific manifestations as well as by emphasizing the important role of German economic thought in the formation of political economy in Russia. The author focuses special attention on the significant role of German universities (especially the University of Gottingen) in providing Russian institutes of higher learning with specialists trained in economic theory. Moreover, emphasis is placed on the important role played by German professors in the first stages of establishing a pedagogical practice for political economy in Russia.
