Abstract:
This article describes how St.Petersburg University exploited the achievements of European economic thought in order to further develop political economy as a scholarly and pedagogical subject. The author concludes that political economy at St.Petersburg University flourished only when there were solid contacts between Russian and European Scholars. L.D. Shirokorad points to the early twentieth century as a milestone in the development of political economy at the University partly due to fruitful international communication. On the other hand, much of the decline in academic standards which occured in the 1920's and especially in the 1930's can be attributed to the severance of these contacts.
