Abstract:
This article argues that the Russian School of National Economics formed an original and independent current of thought within the context of Russian and international economics. This school comprised several groups among which were the Slavonophils, the Romantic Populisms (Narodniki), various interpreters of the Russian Orthodox-Monarchist tradition, and the Eurasionists. The uniting themes among these bodies of thought were their special study of «distinctiveness» especially in regards to Russia and their use of empirical methods. The main achievement of this school was the elaboration of a theory which denied the singularity of economic development while proposing that the model of a mixed economy should serve as a norm for the organization of society. More specifically, a model of «an economy with a heterogeneous structure» was developed. The Russian school exploited these ideas in order to promote the concept of a specifically «Russian path» to economic development based on national principles rather than liberal models of reform
