Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of sociohistorical realias of XII-century Castile, such as the structure of Castilian society, the problems of royal power, the specifics of economic advancement of Castile, the cultural situation. The author emphasizes that the establishment of Castilian dialect as a language of culture was happening when most of the kingdom's population was illiterate and remained in the realm of oral culture.
