Abstract:
Renewable energy must continue to play a key role in the transition to a competitive, safe and sustainable energy system. This transition will not be possible without a much higher share of renewable energy. As far as renewable energy is generated within the EU, it can also reduce the EU's trade deficit in energy products, and its exposure to supply disruptions and price volatility of fossil fuels. Also, renewable energy sources have the potential to stimulate the development of innovative technologies, to create jobs in emerging sectors and to reduce air pollution. Sustainable development is seen as pertaining primarily to environmental issues and grassroots social development, while the information society is perceived as being more relevant to the economic development potential of urban elites (Willard and Halder, 2003).
