Abstract: This article gives a critical overview of the wholeness Torres’s economic writings on Spanish agriculture. In such task, the article differentiates two periods in which the agrarian analysis drew on different theoretical backgrounds but on similar ideological assumptions. During the first phase ideological premises outweighed economic analysis and thus highly influenced on his economic policy proposals. After adopting ‘Keynesian’ approach in the decade of the forties, Torres’s ideology did not vanish, but was fitted into the new theoretical framework. Therefore Torres’s analysis and economic policy were devoid of normative assumptions, what transformed Torres’s theory of economic development foundations, and brought about a change in the role played by agriculture in such a process.
