Abstract:
The starting point of our investigation is the inquiry into the economic determinants of technical progress. For a long time, technical progress was viewed as an extra-economic phenomenon that hardly appeared susceptible to an economic explanation. The attempt made here to render the concept of technical progress an operable one is based on a path model, in which technical progress is specified as a latent variable, indirectly measured by observable input and output indicators. The procedure used here may offer new possibilities of stressing the role of technical progress in empirical work on economic growth.
