Abstract:
This paper aimed to determine the factors affecting the performance of construction projects in Libya. The study was precisely conducted in the city of Misurata located in the west part of Libya. A structured questionnaire was designed to serve as the instrument for the collection of data which was administered on 50 randomly selected indigenous construction firms. Out of the 50 questionnaires sent out, only 42 were retrieved representing a response rate of 84%. Based on the finding, five among the 9 identified factors were chosen by the respondents as the most important factors affecting the performance of construction projects. The five factors identified are those with the highest RII ranking. They include: risk management, quality management, communication management, cost management, and human resource management. It was also found that the common attributes or factors that affected the project performance in projects are mostly caused by poor risk management (30%). This means that 30% of the factors affecting the project performance of Misurata Libyan construction companies are risk management related. And the fact is that this area should not be neglected but should be given more attention.
