Abstract:
This study aims to explore the integration of sustainable development into the educational mission of universities. Prominent international rankings that assess the contribution of universities to the achievement of sustainable development goals are examined. On this basis, sustainability strategies of universities placed at the top of the rankings are selected and examined. Strategies of three Bulgarian universities are analysed, one of which is rated in an international university sustainability ranking. The methodological approach includes a literature review on the changing role of universities in achieving the SDGs. A comparative analysis of the sustainability strategies and programmes of the selected universities is applied. The results reveal that universities around the world are increasingly committed to achieving the SDGs, which requires a significant transformation of all of their activities. The analysis shows that the concept of sustainable development is becoming the basis for managing the development of higher education. Bulgarian HEIs are just beginning to change their strategies and policies in this direction. However, this is not wishful thinking but urgent in the context of global competition in the higher education market.
