Abstract: This article analyses how Mexicans use their time depending on the availability of water in their households. Using proportional hazards duration models, we study how demographic characteristics, including water infrastructure, are associated with the probability of discontinuing different activities —known as a “failure†in literature—. We find that people who have water delivered to their property, but not to inside the dwelling, have a failure probability 12% lower in basic activities than people who have water delivered inside their dwelling (base group). If water hauling is necessary, the failure probability in basic needs is 9% lower compared to the base group. In contrast, those who have water delivered to their property, but not to inside the dwelling, have a failure probability 13% higher in recreation than the base group. Those who haul water, the corresponding figure is 14%. Heterogeneous effects are found by sex and employment status.
