Abstract:
In 2019, the government of the state of Aguascalientes declared 274.86 hectares of the Bosque de Cobos as Protected Natural Areas (ANP). One of the main reasons for declaring the Bosque de Cobos as an ANP is its vulnerability to climate change and urban sprawl. However, there is still no government program in place to ensure the maintenance and preservation of Bosque de Cobos. To estimate the benefits that the conservation of Bosque de Cobos represents for the population of Aguascalientes, this study implemented a Contingent Valuation protocol to a sample of residents in the capital of Aguascalientes. Through a double-bounded dichotomous question, respondents reported their willingness to pay an additional amount on the entrance fees of the city's main parks. The estimated average willingness to pay ranges between 53 pesos (3.14 USD) and 64 pesos (3.79 USD) per person and visit ― an individual value equivalent to between 49.6 million pesos (2.9 million USD) and 59.9 million pesos (3.5 million USD) annually when aggregated over the adult population living in Aguascalientes with paid employment.
