Abstract:
The aim of this article is to identify the influence of environmental taxes on the level of emissions at the state level. The central hypothesis is that environmental taxes do not affect the level of state emissions. To validate this hypothesis, we use a data panel that relates the level of state emissions with two taxes: ISAN and IEPS. The principal results show that the influence of environmental taxes is ambiguous. Based on the results of the panel models, we make a series of recommendations of fiscal-environmental policy with the purpose of offering alternatives that promote greenhouse gas emissions mitigation policies in Mexico.
