Abstract:
An informal economy has always been widespread in Turkey. However, especially after the 1980s’ neo-liberal political economic policies, there has been a rapid growth in the informal sector which can be called ‘unprotected sector’ for the workers involved. The job opportunities created in this sector are mostly casual, temporary, and payments are low which leads to new urban poor. It will be based on a research which was carried out in two cities, Istanbul and Gaziantep. A questionnaire, deep interviews and focus groups with the poor households were applied.
