Abstract:
In this study, the relationship between the economic classification of public expenditure and economic growth in Turkey is examined by taking into consideration of the structural break and by causality and vector autoregression (VAR) analysis for the period 1987-2005. When the structural break is included into vector autoregressive model as a dummy variable, the results of the Granger causality test show that there is a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to current expenditure and total expenditure. Furthermore, causality relationship is not found running from economic growth to transfer and investment expenditure. Additionally, impulse-response and variance decomposition analysis support the causality relation. As a result, in the period studied for Turkey, it is concluded that an increase in economic growth would lead to an increase in public expenditures.
