Abstract:
In this paper, it is aimed to investigate whether there is a relationship between the amounts of emigrants and the volume of trade, and to determine the direction of this linkage if there is. To this end, a panel data based augmented gravity model is used in this paper for the period of 2000–2005. In the economic literature, gravity model has been used successfully in explaining the behavior of many flows such as migration, tourism and trade. In this paper the variables of economic size and distance of the partner country, and amount of Turkish emigrants are employed as explanatory variables in order to explain the bilateral trade volume in terms of exports and imports. Empirical findings show that there is a positive and robust relationship between migration and trade in the case of Turkey.
