Constraints and Opportunities for Innovation in Green Enterprises: Implications for Land and Water Management in Rural Uganda

Abstract: Abstract This study examines the factors that hamper innovation and the opportunities for innovation in green enterprises. A descriptive analysis of secondary data of 423 enterprises was done. The data was retrieved from the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) for 2014 National Innovation Survey. In addition, a comparative case study analysis of three green enterprises was also done to allow for a more detailed and contextualized investigation. The results show that cost and market factors are the key hindrances to innovation in green enterprises. Furthermore, the emerging customers and suppliers from BRICS, the potential for local fertilizer market, and increased demand for knowledge on organic farming provide great opportunities for innovations in green enterprises. Finally, the study finds that green enterprises in the agricultural sector mainly depend on information from customers, suppliers, and indigenous knowledge from local production networks for innovation. Results have important policy implications for those companies that want to improve eco-innovation, management of resources, and the types of actions within firms most suitable for improving their eco-innovative behavior.
