Abstract: Abstract Research purpose: The objective of this study is to provide knowledge on the characteristics of Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) in Europe, China, and Asian countries through bibliometric analysis. We also try to analyze the countries’ experiences to make suggestions for Vietnam in implementing the ETS in the future. Research motivation: ETS are considered instruments to mitigate the impacts of global climate change. The carbon market innovation marks an essential step in the drive towards a carbon-neutral economy. In Vietnam, aiming for Net zero by 2050, these instruments are essential but have not been applied. Several climate action trackers even accuse Vietnam of taking emissions reduction lightly, from the top authority to the economic organizations. Research design, approach, and method: We employed the systematic literature review and the bibliometric analysis methods to identify the situation of ETS research in selected areas, such as Europe, which is the pioneer in carbon reduction policies, China, which is the second biggest country in the world, and Asia, which is the most dynamic area in the world to understand the characteristics of ETS in these areas. Main findings: Using the bibliometric analysis, we found the main focus of ETS research in Europe, China, and Asian countries from 2014 to 2024. Also, in combination with the systematic literature review, we found the experiences of the interplay between policy design, market dynamics, and the industrial landscape in shaping the success of ETS in the countries and made suggestions for Vietnam. Practical/managerial implications: The potential benefits of implementing ETS in Vietnam are significant. They offer hope for a more sustainable future and enhance Vietnam’s international standing in climate negotiations, demonstrating a robust commitment to global climate goals. These systems could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote clean energy development, and stimulate economic growth, bringing a sense of positivity and progress to organizations.
