Chapter Chapter 12 in Mechanisms for Long-Term Innovation, 2022, pp 243-266 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we focus on the role of “breakthrough technologies”. In particular, we shed light on the breakthrough technology invented by John E. Cadotte (1925–2005) of FilmTec. Cadotte's patent for polyamide composite membranes, filed in 1979, is known as the ‘344 patent, from its patent number 4,277,344. The ‘344 patent was an innovative technology that achieved a high level of compatibility between various contradictory performances through the use of membrane composition and interfacial polycondensation. This led to the convergence of diversified technological approaches.
