Chapter Chapter 2 in Western Multinational Corporations in Latin America, 2022, pp 7-32 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides a sound point of departure for further theory development by dismantling predominant orthodox and institutional economic approaches with respect to their capability to deal with certain contradictory developments relating to MNCs in Latin America. It is shown that the exclusive focus on (the size of) impersonal markets and the inherent neglect of alternative forms of socioeconomic organization prevent extant analyses from better grasping both idiosyncratic developmental distortions and the non-identical Gestalt of multinational corporations. Subsequently, paths for analytical improvement are discussed, and a guiding research agenda is developed that aims at a tailor-made understanding of MNCs’ contribution to development as a matter of specific institutional change caused rather than one of, for example, GDP generated.
