A chapter in Economic Policy Frameworks Revisited, 2023, pp 1-8 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract What is the role today of monetary and fiscal policy? The past few years have seen an intensification of the debate on the scope and rationale of economic policy, stimulated by the responses to the massive economic shocks which affected the global economy since the beginning of the current century (notably the financial crisis of 2007–08, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russian war in Ukraine). The proven effectiveness of the policy measures which have been put in place poses, however, a challenge to the many theoretical models which tend to question the desirability of discretionary fiscal and monetary policy, when not doubting their very effectiveness.
