China’s Strategic Pathway from Deng Xiaoping to Xi Jinping
Huw McKay
Chapter Chapter 7 in The Strategic Logic of China’s Economy, 2024, pp 183-224 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter will trace the contours of China’s remarkably successful turn towards an outward-oriented industrialisation strategy from 1978 up to the start of the first leadership term of Xi Jinping. The spectacular outpouring of economic growth that has occurred in China since the 1978 kink in its strategic approach represents arguably the most impressive and sustained increase in society-wide living standards ever achieved by an already large economy over a multi-decade period.
