Abstract: Abstract This chapter utilises demographic, economic activity, and personal income data from the 2001 Census and the Revenue Service at the local (municipal and post-code) level in order to study income distribution in Greece, and thus provide a better understanding of the factors affecting the economic performance of localities. This is facilitated by (a) income maps of Greece, which distinguish between towns and clusters of communities that may traverse regions or constitute identifiable sub-regions, and (b) an econometric analysis that isolates the spatial from other effects. The findings reveal a substantial sub-regional heterogeneity, and raise a number of questions à propos the suitability of the country's traditional regional model in efficiently promoting economic development, prosperity, and convergence to the EU-15 average.
