A chapter in Contemporary Sustainable Organisational Practices, 2024, pp 171-189 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the critical global issue of climate change, emphasising the need for decarbonisation, especially in rural settings. It explores the concept of ‘Smart Transitions’ as a way to integrate modern technology and sustainable practices in rural areas, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable development. The chapter highlights the unique energy dynamics in rural communities, highlighting their distinct energy mix influenced by geographical, socioeconomic, and infrastructural factors. Key strategies for the effective implementation of rural smart transitions are outlined. In addition, two insightful case studies are presented: the Retrofitting Hard-to-Treat Housing in Intake Suburb, Doncaster, and the Zero Carbon Communities Programme in South Cambridgeshire, UK. These cases exemplify practical applications of the strategies discussed, showcasing successful community involvement and innovative solutions to unique challenges. The chapter concludes by highlighting the significance of tailored solutions for rural areas, the role of community engagement, and the necessity of supportive policies and financial backing. It also projects future trends in rural decarbonisation, anticipating continued technological advancements, the increasing importance of rural areas in global efforts, and integrated approaches combining energy transition with broader rural development objectives.
