A chapter in Sustainability in Education, 2026, pp 637-665 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract As countries, communities, organisations, and institutions navigate global environmental and social challenges, and risks, the importance of sustainability education continues to grow. Sustainability education is viewed as a critical driver not only in combatting global risks, but also in supporting organisations to meet their sustainability commitments and ambitions. However, despite the significance of sustainability education, reports indicate that there is a sustainability skills gap across all types of organisations (including micro-businesses, SMEs, corporations, and charities) and at all levels (junior roles through to the C-Suite). This chapter explores how sustainability is influencing the business landscape, the sustainability knowledge gap, the challenges of delivering sustainability education, and the solutions educators can adopt. The research, through interviewing eight industry professionals, found that whilst there are many factors that influence, positively and negatively, engagement with sustainability education, educators can implement strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of those challenges. By focusing on the challenges and solutions for delivering sustainability education, this chapter contributes to the discourse on how sustainability education is implemented and experienced within UK organisations. The chapter provides actionable insight into the world of delivering sustainability education and the findings can be applied to all educators, across all types of organisations.
