Abstract:
Abstract The introductory chapter presents the urgent need for a global transformation towards sustainability. It highlights the role of sustainable innovations as potential catalysts for systemic change, emphasizing their dependence on knowledge creation and transfer among diverse stakeholders. Wilke depicts the study’s approach, which employs the proximity concept—covering geographical, cognitive, institutional, organizational, and social dimensions—to analyze multi-actor knowledge processes. The research questions of the study focus on the knowledge base, types, and idiosyncrasies regarding sustainable innovations, as well as the mechanisms and effects of proximity dimensions. Methodologically, the study combines innovation system theory and sustainability science, using systematic literature reviews to refine an analytical proximity framework for examining knowledge flows in sustainable innovation networks.
