The Utopian Element in the Formation of Doctrines on the State in German “Staatswissenschaft”

Abstract: Abstract The article focuses on the problem: How to evaluate the role and ­activities of the State in different economic systems? How did authors of specific doctrines of “Staatswissenschaft” evaluate the State? To answer these questions, basic guidelines and relevant definitions are given in the second paragraph. The third paragraph points out different concepts of the State on the grounds of German “Staatswissenschaft” of the nineteenth century. The basic ideas of selected authors, having analyzed the State in a utopian view, are compared. The chapter starts from feudalism, deals with the relation of natural and positive order, with the role of the State in classical economics, in the romantic Staatswissenschaft and in diverse concepts of Socialist authors, “State-Socialism,” Liberalism, and the German Historical Schools. The fourth chapter points out utopian elements in the considered concepts of German “Staatswissenschaft.”
