Abstract: Abstract When Friedrich List and his family returned to Europe in 1832, they had to stay in Hamburg for almost one year due to his wife’s illness before they could continue to their desired destination of Leipzig. Publisher Julius Campe reported this misfortune to his author Heinrich Heine in a letter dated September 11, 1832: “List, whom you got to know in Paris, is here now. His wife is emotionally disturbed and has been admitted to the hospital here. He will have to remain here for a while to wait for her convalescence.”
