Chapter Chapter 19 in Daily Life in Classical Athens, 2024, pp 229-239 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter further describes the structure of the Athenian navy and how land army, the so-called hoplite phalanx, was organized. It describes the logic behind the phalanx land army organization and then narrates, in brief, the Battle of Chaeronea, which was a pivotal battle, with which the Macedonians prevailed over the Southern Greeks, establishing a new order of things in Southern Greece. The defeat at Chaeronea was a milestone, because it was combined with the gradual decline of Athens and the rise of Macedon in the Greek and global affairs of the times.
