Abstract: Abstract Since the 1950s, research on Latin American economic history has been dominated by the Marxist and Dependencia paradigms. However, since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been a trend toward an increasing influence of the cliometric and new institutionalist approach. As a result, there have been significant advances in research areas such as anthropometrics, social savings of railroads, and the long-term effects of colonial institutions, such as encomiendas and slavery.
