Taking Stock: Multiple and Complex Challenges, But No Effective Solutions

Hermann Troger

Chapter 5 in Human Resource Management in a Post COVID-19 World, 2021, pp 91-105 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract We are experiencing a working world that is changing at an alarming pace under the influence of the megatrends of globalisation and digitalisation, as well as demographic changes. Over the past year, these developments have been exacerbated by the global coronavirus pandemic. All these are challenges that must be met both at the macroeconomic and socio-political level and in the microcosm of individual companies. They are reflected in the world of work in two respects: on the one hand, in the enormous complexity and variety of tasks with which HR managers are confronted, and on the other hand, in the equally diverse opportunities available to them. No other functional area within organisations has grown in recent years in its complexity and variety of tasks as much as Human Resources. It is therefore not surprising that the HR department has come under heavy criticism—so much so that even its dissolution is being called for.
