A chapter in Financing Startups, 2022, pp 31-47 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Crowdfunding makes it possible for entrepreneurs to obtain capital for the financing of all kinds of initiatives. It also allows the entire population (the crowd) to participate in the financing of these projects. It is an effective, flexible and scalable financing alternative. This is reflected in the growing popularity it has had in recent years and in forecasts for its future, which indicate that it will maintain this trend. In parallel, it has captured the attention of the academy, which has tried to identify the key factors that determine its success in obtaining financing. These factors are diverse and can be classified under five headings: project characteristics, communication between participants, social networks, financing model and financial information. The crowdfunding models allow ecological and social motivations to play a significant role in financing decisions, which means it has the potential to contribute significantly to the construction of a more sustainable world.
