Chapter Chapter 18 in Leading With Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, 2022, pp 297-314 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Higher education institutions have typically approached the need for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts through technical solutions such as diversity statements, surface-level diversity training, or newly-created senior leadership roles such as a Chief Diversity Officer. However, such efforts can hinder genuine culture change without opportunities for dialogue and intentional efforts to decenter whiteness through critical reflection as a community of learners. This chapter explores the current efforts around DEI within higher education, examines why lasting change is often difficult in higher education institutions and offers tangible practices for dialogic practices to decenter whiteness at various levels of the institution to promote sustainable DEI change.
