Chapter Chapter 21 in Leading With Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, 2022, pp 341-355 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program made a breakthrough call in May 2017 when it required Canadian universities to address the underrepresentation of women, Indigenous peoples, persons with disability and racialized persons in these prestigious positions. The same year, those universities collectively committed to a 5-year action plan “to integrate equity, diversity and inclusion [EDI] in their teaching, research and governance” (Universities Canada. 2017). Since then, most Canadian universities have updated or developed EDI policies. Among them, the 2020 action plan of the Université de Montréal promises to put EDI at the heart of its institutional life—either as a study, research, work or life environment, as well as a civic partner. This chapter reviews the evolution of the EDI commitment in Canada from the perspective of the biggest university in Quebec and analyzes how this commitment may work as a transformative leadership strategy both locally and nationally.
