Chapter Chapter 22 in Leading With Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, 2022, pp 357-378 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Leadership style is significant for sustainable quality and standard education in higher institutions of learning worldwide. Therefore, leadership should include diversity, equity and inclusivity of ethnicity. The challenge in Kenyan institutions of higher learning is leadership tha promote ethnicity and ignore diversity, equity and inclusivity. This leads to poor administration and management, and conflict between university council members, community members and politicians. As a consequence, some higher institutions are under acting leadership capacities, which leads to corruption, poor quality and low standards of education. The objective is to investigate whether the variables of diversity, equity and inclusivity are adhered to in recruiting top management in higher education institutions in Kenya. The research employed survey method; data was collected by use of questionnaires from employees in higher institutions of learning through simple random sampling. The key results show leadership conflicts as regards employment. University council members are often compelled to appoint top management from the ethnic tribe in which the institution is located. The study concludes and recommends progressive and transformative leadership with diversity and equity, qualifications and competence skills irrespective of ethnicity is what can transform and sustain quality and standard education in higher institutions in Kenya.
