Chapter Chapter 1 in Web3 Applications Security and New Security Landscape, 2024, pp 3-18 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the rapidly evolving decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, emphasizing the critical importance of security within this space. DeFi has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, disrupting traditional finance systems. DeFi is defined, and its various components, including decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, and yield farming protocols, are explored. The (de)centralized nature of DeFi is also discussed, empowering users while presenting unique challenges. Security takes center stage. Inherent risks and vulnerabilities in DeFi are described deeply, with a focus on the potential consequences of security breaches for users and the ecosystem. Real-world examples of DeFi hacks illustrate the impact of such incidents. Importance of security audits and best practices is stressed to address these risks, particularly concerning smart contracts that allow DeFi protocols to exist. Rigorous audits and adherence to industry standards can significantly reduce vulnerabilities.
