The Influence of Language: An Often Underestimated Strategic Success Factor for Global Endeavors—From the Perspective of a Language Professional

Juliane Wagner ()

Chapter 6 in The Sustainable Organization, 2025, pp 129-144 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores the important yet often overlooked role of language as a strategic success factor in global endeavors, particularly in the context of the Three-Pillar Model and the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It highlights the pivotal role of linguistics and translation in making frameworks like the SDGs accessible across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. Theoretical insights, including the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and Chomsky’s Universal Grammar, provide a foundation for understanding the influence of language on thought and action. Two case studies illustrate the evolving landscape of translation. They contrast workflows involving human translations in corporate settings with an AI-driven approach in scientific research. Ultimately, the chapter advocates for the deliberate and expert application of language strategies to bridge cultural or regional divides and achieve sustainability within companies.
