Chapter 9 in Negotiators who Changed the World, 2025, pp 155-196 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was a multitalented leader whose exceptional negotiation skills transformed the fragmented and unstable Trucial States into the peaceful, prosperous, and united federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Through strategic diplomacy, inclusive decision-making, and a commitment to consensus building, Sheikh Zayed overcame deep-rooted tribal divisions, external geopolitical pressures, and economic challenges to unify the emirates. His approach to negotiation, rooted in nonviolence, patience, pragmatism, and win-win methods, allowed him to navigate complex power dynamics while fostering collaboration and mutual trust. His ability to balance tradition with modern governance set a precedent for leadership beyond the Middle East. This chapter explores some of Sheikh Zayed’s famous negotiation stories intertwined with a comprehensive strategic analysis, to capute his enduring lessons for negotiators worldwide.
