A chapter in Resilient Business Models, 2025, pp 271-283 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This case study examines the business model and strategic evolution of Mediterranea Pesca S.p.A., a leading Italian company in the frozen products sector. Founded in 1979, the company has demonstrated remarkable resilience through continuous growth, market expansion, and adaptation to changing consumer needs. The narrative traces its transformation from a fish distribution focus to a comprehensive frozen food enterprise with a widespread logistics network and a diverse customer portfolio across central-southern Italy and abroad. Key aspects of Mediterranea Pesca’s resilient business model include its strategic shift from solely distribution to also manufacturing, with the introduction of proprietary brands, Mareperla and Amordigelo, enhancing brand value and market control. Furthermore, the company’s commitment to sustainability is evident through significant investments in a photovoltaic system and plans for a green-certified warehouse expansion, aiming for substantial energy self-sufficiency and reduced environmental impact. The case highlights how these proactive measures, coupled with operational excellence and a focus on product quality and logistical efficiency, have enabled Mediterranea Pesca to maintain its leading position and exemplify a robust, adaptable business model in a dynamic market environment.
