A chapter in Resilient Business Models, 2025, pp 355-362 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This case study, “Fondazione Dioguardi ‘Cantiere Evento’: A Hub of Cultural and Social Innovation,” explores an innovative approach to urban development that transforms traditional construction sites into dynamic spaces for cultural engagement and community participation. Challenging the conventional perception of construction sites as intrusive and inaccessible, the “Cantiere Evento” model, theorised and pioneered by Gianfranco Dioguardi, advocates for opening these spaces to citizens. The case highlights the historical precedents and subsequent evolution of this model, from the “Laboratori di Quartiere” fostering direct citizen involvement in urban regeneration to major cultural events such as Luigi Nono’s Prometheus and initiatives at the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber in Milan. This transformation fosters social rebirth, promotes active citizenship, and enhances the public perception of urban development. By securing public and private funding and leveraging diverse cultural activities, the Fondazione Dioguardi’s “Cantiere Evento” demonstrates a resilient business model that integrates social responsibility with operational practice, turning potential inconveniences into opportunities for cultural promotion, training, and strengthened community bonds. This approach exemplifies how innovative engagement can create sustained value and redefine the role of construction within the urban fabric, thus contributing to more resilient city models.
