Rethinking AI Workforce Planning: Practical Strategies for Sustainable AI-Human Collaboration
Prashant Singh Yadav
Chapter 9 in The AI Competency Paradox, 2026, pp 187-217 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter challenges the prevailing “AI as a skill” narrative and demonstrates that workforce planning must fundamentally change to address both operational excellence and strategic differentiation. Drawing on historical evidence across five major technological disruptions spanning 150+ years, we analyze and apply Strategic Workforce Management as the approach to create sustainable competitive advantage through technological transitions. The analysis reveals that organizations pursuing AI primarily for operational efficiency consistently underperform those that leverage AI for strategic positioning. We present practical implementation methodologies that enable organizations to build disruption-resilient workforce capabilities and validate the framework through contemporary examples including Netflix, JPMorgan, and DeepSeek.
